Here are two famous late 19th century Neapolitan songs – a genre that I am fond of.<\/p>\n

“Funiculi Funicula<\/a>” was composed in 1880 to commemorate the opening of a funicular railroad<\/a> that ran up Mount Vesuvius until it was destroyed by the volcano’s 1944 eruption.<\/p>\n

“O Sole Mio<\/a>” was composed in 1898.<\/p>\n

Vessella’s Italian Band recorded for Victor, Brunswick and Edison.\u00a0 Its leader, Oreste Vessella was born in Italy in 1882 and emigrated to the United States in 1901.<\/p>\n
